Losing Our Urban Streetscape / more gaps on 10th Street |
The plans for the building that would replace School 54 call for increased parking exposure on 10th Street. This would result in a building setback and orientation not compatible with the historic urban design of 10th Street.
Urban population density is essential to the support and revitalization of neighborhood retail. Expansion at the site into the residential area of the neighborhood has already resulted in the loss of four homes with more demolition planned.
- The historic designs of Brookside School 54 and the First German Reformed Church building fit well with the urban architecture of 10th Street. Both buildings are brick with classic detailing. Many of these architectural details will never be duplicated in a replacement building because of budget or material restraints.
The First German Reformed Church building now houses the Neighborhood Fellowship Church. This ministry provides tutoring, meals, and clothing to neighborhood residents in need.

A break with tradition. Modern architecture and setbacks disrupt the historic streetscape of 10th Street. |

Reproducing the historic detail of School 54 at today's rates would be cost prohibitive. |
