Good News/the church may be saved. A new plan under consideration by IPS will spare the First German Reformed Church building (now Neighborhood Fellowship Church) from demolition. Bad News/more demolitions. This new plan calls for the further demolition of 6 homes in the neighborhood on the west side of Oakland Avenue. That would bring the total of demolished homes to 10. The expanded school lot would cross Oakland Avenue to the alley. This plan calls for Oakland to be vacated from the first alley north of 10th Street to 11th Street. Worse News/IPS remains inflexible. In earlier criticism of the Historic Landmarks rehabilitation plan, IPS cited costs and lack of building space as its primary reasons against renovation. This new plan would increase the lot size by 1/2 acre more than the first plan. This option will also be less expensive in land acquisition since the church was going to be taken by eminent domain and would have included costly legal fees. IPS will demolish School 54. Even with more space for less money an IPS spokesman stated that IPS remains dedicated to their plan to demolish the old building and will not consider renovation. |
