"Designated in the Gospel as "the disciple whom Jesus loved," St. John appears therein as the model of devotion to the Sacred Heart. Faithful to the end, he clung to that Heart until he saw it stilled and pierced in death. Afterwards he is manifested as the model of devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. He took the place which Jesus had filled, and he continued to render her the love of a son until she died." (Handbook, 24, 2) That John was one of those closest to Jesus is demonstrated by the fact that only he, Peter, and James were present at such events as the Transfiguration (Matt. 17:1; Mark 9:2; Luke 9:28), the healing of Peter's mother-in-law (Mark 1:29-31), the raising of Jairus's daughter from the dead (Mark 5:22-43; Luke 8:40-56), and the agony in the Garden of Gethsemane (Matt. 26:37ff; Mark 14:33ff). For this reason, Saint Paul names John, Peter, and James as "these leaders, these pillars" of the Church in Jerusalem (Gal. 2:9). St. John's feast occurs on December 27th. |

Prayer to Saint John the EvangelistO Glorious Saint John, you were so loved by Jesus that you merited to
rest your head upon his breast, and to be left in his place as a son to
Mary. Obtain for us an ardent love for Jesus and Mary. Let me be united
with them now on earth and forever after in heaven. |
